Weekly Recommendations! 03/24/17

So, as I promised in episode 024, I’m kicking off a new feature here on our website. I like to call it… Weekly Recs!! (That’s short for ‘recommendations’.)

“What is this?” you might ask, with your German accent or otherwise. Great question! Every Friday – or most of them – Ryan and/or I will post about something that we’re really digging that week. It could be anything! Music, books, TV shows, apps, other podcasts, or just about anything else that we can think of. Basically, we’ll take something awesome that we like to use/watch/read and share it with you so you can enjoy it too.

Now that I’ve done all of this set up, let’s jump into this week’s rec!

This week I want to share one of my favourite podcasts of all time. OF ALL TIME, I tell you! The Vinyl Cafe is a radio show that airs on CBC and is also released online. Created and hosted by legendary Canadian storyteller Stuart McLean, the show is usually split into three segments featuring wistfully nostalgic stories written by McLean, essays received from listeners, and musical guests.

The main “Vinyl Cafe” stories in each episode center around a character named Dave, who owns a little record store that shares its name with the show. The stories also feature Dave’s wife, Morley, their two children, Sam and Stephanie, and assorted friends and neighbours. What makes this show so great is the way McLean shares these stories – his style is very unique and lends a special quality to Dave’s misadventures.

I grew up with this show; it’s always been a part of my life. Every Sunday my family would tune in to see what kind of mischief Dave was getting into, often laughing so much that our faces would hurt! But along with the fun and humour, the stories have a timeless and enduring quality that really hits home.

I highly recommend this podcast! When you check it out, I recommend starting with the episode “Dave’s Hypochondria”. Prepare for a barrel of laughs!

To find The Vinyl Cafe, either visit their podcast page, or search it up in your podcast app.

That you check-in with him next week. 😉

  1. “Ryan recommends that you check in with him next week” made me snort. Thanks.
The Vinyl Cafe sounds cool, I’ll have to check it out
