OK SO FOLLOW ME ON THIS
Hold the 3 gallon container over the 4 gallon dish. Pour the 5 gallon into the 3 gallon. 2 gallons will overflow into the dish. Repeat once.

That would work, if you had a tardis and you could visit a time and place where you already exist. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

I didn’t look it up, but why won’t my solution work? The math part works out.
I mean I guess some will stay on the jar as it spills out, but that’s a pretty trivial fault.
No, because that’s putting two gallons at a time in the dish and it needs to be at once.
