Random Thought: Celebrating Good Friday may very well be the only good kind of Schadenfreude.

Random Thought: When Kristen gets caught up on the Aux Cable & Fancasts, maybe there will be an episode where she answers questions from all of us, ‘lightning round’ style…

Hey for those wearing blankets on their heads last night for the Skype call, what should we call are group?

    Here’s the thing:

Only the cool people wear blankets, but once those people wear those blankets, they aren’t cool anymore, even though they become even cooler by participating in the blanket group.

How about the “Ironically Cool Enthusiasts (I.C.E.)”?

Icy what you did there, Jeff (even though I’m not a cool/uncool blanket wearer).

We keep having winter here too. Although today was fairly warm for a change.

Out of curiosity is there anyone on the not-forum besides me who disagrees with Harry potter?

Ehh, I haven’t seen Harry Potter. From what I know of it, it doesn’t seem like I’d like it.
Now about magic in movies though, it depends on some things.

Well, what do you think about Narnia, or Lord of the Rings? Those both have magic in them.

I don’t agree with Harry Potter, not because of specifically the magic though

To answer your question Franklin I don’t agree with Narnia or lord of the rings either.

I am curious, Joshua, what you would suggest for the term that an author ought to use for supernatural forces in a fictional setting if not the term “magic”. It seems to me that the term means different things to different authors.

The reason I bring this up is that I really enjoyed reading the tales of C.S. Lewis when I was younger. The term “magic” present in them seemed like the name used for powers that acted in the fictional universe, whether the specific power was Godly, devilish, or impartial, and was not actually advocating for the use of spells, witchcraft, or the dark arts in the real world whatsoever. (At least, that’s how I perceived it when I read the stories. I had been explained in school that C.S. Lewis was writing from a Christian perspective, and I carried that thought in the back of my mind the entire time that I was reading the stories.)

There is something which unites magic and applied science (technology) while separating them from the “wisdom” of earlier ages. For the wise men of old, the cardinal problem of human life was how to conform the soul to objective reality, and the solution was wisdom, self-discipline , and virtue. For the modern, the cardinal problem is how to conform reality to the wishes of man, and the solution is a technique.

For the wise men of old the cardinal problem had been how to conform the soul to reality. For magic and applied science alike the problem is how to subdue reality to the wishes of men.

    – C.S. Lewis

I think it’s cool that today is 8-1-18 in America, written as 1-8-18 in some parts of the world.

Here is me attempting to post a comment at 2:22am on 2/2/20…
Maybe I should’ve waited a couple years to match digits exactly.

    Tube late.

Except… it’s not tube late. It’s right on time… and early.

Such a paradox this post is. Maybe I’d better get some sleep.
