I’ve had an idea for a podcast for a very long period of time and it is just about to the point where it will be a question of “when” rather than “if” I get it going. I’m finally in a financial situation where I feel comfortable paying the monthly fee for Libsyn, I have a decent recording setup, and I know who my audience is.
It’s going to be called “Tribute To Troy: College Football From The Perspective Of A USC Fan” (no applause yet, it still doesn’t exist as a thing yet). Originally the idea just came from the fact that my friends and I used to lose hours talking about football, and while I don’t have an official co-host in mind I feel like there’s a ton of room for a down-to-earth, personal podcast (ala The Aux Cable, The Inner Tube) in an industry dominated by journalists and people who make these sorts of shows for a living.
So I’m probably only one of a handful of people in this community that follows college football (or any sport for that matter), but I wanted to get some input on one particular aspect of the podcast: I want to make sure that it’s open and comprehensible to outsiders. I want to create an environment where people who want to learn about the game aren’t shunned, but where I don’t have to hold back and bore the hardcore college football fans in my audience.
I’ll probably end up condensing this whole essay that I just wrote and turn it into a question for The Aux Cable or The Inner Tube, but anyway, all the rambling aside what I really wanted to ask you guys is this:

*******(Here’s the “TOO LONG; DIDN’T READ” portion of all of this, if you want to just skip to here and bypass all the rambling)*******

What would it take for you personally to be interested in a podcast about college football?
“I would never be interested” is a perfectly acceptable answer and I understand if that’s where you’re coming from. I would just love to know if there’s anything specific that I could do to make a podcast like this interesting to non-sports fans or at the very least comprehensible to newcomers.

I love college and professional football and tend to follow it well during the season (I don’t follow during draft picks like I should)
My only issue is that you root for the wrong USC 😛
But in all seriousness, I would listen. I love football and love hearing people argue and discuss football (not things girls typically say, huh?).
As long as episodes aren’t terribly long, you should be good. Get yourself a cohost that likes a different team and has a different perspective, that would make it very interesting.

Funny enough, the friend that I was initially eyeing to be my cohost (and also the guy that I would spend hours talking college football with) is a hardcore UCLA fan. He moved a couple of hours away and we both have pretty busy schedules, but I want to try and get him on the show as often as possible.

I feel like you would be a fun person to argue/debate with, so hearing you argue/debate about something I personally love, would be very interesting.

I would love to hear that conversation! (USC vs. UCLA)
I feel like it would be the same as me and a Clemson fan.

But to answer your question about what it would take for me to be interested in the podcast: debates. Two or so people with different favorite teams, different opinions, talking about college football.

I’m not really interested in college football myself. But, I feel like the podcast might be a good introduction to football for non-sport people who have never liked football.

Well, I am a unique American citizen… I don’t really like football… at all… However, I also don’t do any kind of content creation and I love the Inner Tube. It would depend whether or not I enjoyed the setting and what you talk about and stuff. I definitely would try it out, though!

It may just be me, but if you and your cohost (or guests on the podcast) aren’t terrible potty mouths, that would be great. I dislike hearing people discussing football but they cuss so much that you can barely understand the point they are trying to convey.

I really have no interest in college football. HOWEVER, I would probably listen anyway. So I say go for it! I’m not sure what would make it interesting to me, but as long as you are enjoying yourself and goofing off a little bit and stuff, then I would probably listen!

I don’t sports. However I would be interested in hearing outlandish analogies to explain obscure football rules.

The problem is I’m a nerdy/geeky person that greatly enjoys baseball and a few other sports, which results in my being slightly excluded from both circles.

He has just recorded his first episode, it’s not out yet though. He talked about it a bit on his Anchor Station. Should hopefully begin soon!

If you’re interested, here’s the SoundCloud link: https://soundcloud.com/troy-wullbrandt/tribute-to-troy-episode-one-week-3-vs-texas

And here’s the YouTube link: https://youtu.be/n5xzPP7Fks4

Couldn’t post it to Anchor because it took too long and everything on the premiere episode is now horribly outdated, but I’m planning on putting out a new one this week.

The podcast in its current format is done. I might do something like it later if I find a co-host, but for now I’ve got school, work, a YouTube channel that I’ve neglected over the past 3 months, and I’m trying to re-enter the SBIFF 10-10-10 competition and I’m volunteering twice a week to help with youth group services at my church. I’m spread super thin and I can’t find a way to balance a weekly podcast into all that.

I’m sorry to disappoint, but until I have other things worked out the Tribute To Troy Podcast is done.

Mason probably already listen to the Anchor segment that I made about this.
